Chapter Twenty-Six

It was a stalemate. No matter what plan they came up with, if she didn’t go to Magnus herself, he’d kill again.

Kate hurriedly dressed, contemplating her options. None of them were good. If she went alone, she was as good as dead, and that didn’t guarantee Harry’s safety. If she went with the team...maybe the back up they offered would get Harry out alive.

Morgan.

She stilled, sweater in hand as the thought of the dead young man invaded her mind. She balled her hands in the material to stop them from shaking. Visions swam before her eyes, burning her retinas and drawing more tears. Numbness engulfed her. Was Morgan really dead? She thought back to the panicked sound of Harry’s voice and knew that if Magnus hadn’t killed their friend, he’d at least wounded him.

Ninety minutes.

She’d already wasted ten.

Swiping at the useless tears, Kate finished dressing and ran downstairs where Gabe had assembled the troops. Everyone stood around the kitchen dining table. A map of Bourke’s Ridge sat unfolded in the center of their huddle. Someone had drawn a large red X over the pub. Smaller blue X marks were dotted around the building.

As she neared the group, Ben and Hollywood parted to let her in. Kate looked from the map to Gabe and then to Riley.

“If you think you’re going in there,” Riley said, shaking his head. “Think again.”

Fear gathered behind her sternum. “But I have to.”

Riley gave a single shake of the head. “No. You don’t.”

Gabe’s lips pressed together so tight they turned white. He opened his mouth as if to protest before shaking his head and backing down. To her surprise, he stayed quiet.

“Ben and I will be here, and here.” Riley pointed to two of the blue crosses situated at the rear of the pub, close to access points. “Hollywood will set himself up on the roof of the supermarket here.” He pointed again. “From what I can tell, this vantage point has a clear line of sight into the front barroom.”

Perfect for a sniper.

No one needed to say it.

“And Gabe?” She glanced toward her man, knowing she didn’t want him anywhere near the scene of the action when it all went down.

“Here,” Riley pointed to the map again, “with you at Harry’s place. That’s our rendezvous once we’re all out and safe.”

Gabe snorted, sounding disgusted, but one look from Riley and he didn’t make another peep. Riley turned a serious expression toward her. Steely blue eyes were in no mood for an argument. “We will stop him, Kate.”

“And by stop, you mean kill, right?”

His head gave a small jerk upward and the heavy air hanging over them suggested that was their only option. “He will never stop threatening you, or us, Kate.”

“Harry’s brother is the local sergeant. We should enlist back up.”

Beside her, Hollywood rested a hand on her shoulder. “Small town cops?” He shook his head. “They only get in the way.”

She’d met Neville on a handful of occasions. He’d never come across as the bumbling copper to her.
